Muldoon Heart Center is the nucleus of our commitment to providing the most advanced cardiovascular care in south Orange County. The Center provides a full range of cardiac care – from our cardiac surgery program, including a nationally recognized coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) program, to our comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program. To continue our outstanding care, we seek healthcare professionals who share our dedication to providing excellent patient care and safety through treatment, diagnosis, research, education and prevention. You can contribute to our mission in these areas:
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
This unit features 27 all-private rooms and provides care for critically-ill adult and geriatric patients with cardiac, pulmonary or medical-surgical diagnoses who require intensive care. We provide compassionate caring for surgical cardiac patients, pulmonary arterial hypertension patients, patients with sepsis, patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring and patients experiencing multi-system failure. In addition, we treat patients needing intensive monitoring for diagnostic or therapeutic interventions in conjunction with invasive monitoring and/or therapy with mechanical ventilation, IABP support, hypothermia after cardiac arrest, continuous renal replacement therapy, roto-prone therapy and vasoactive medications. We have been awarded three out of three stars for the care and management of our CABG patients by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Cardiac Telemetry
The 34-bed unit is a multifaceted care delivery area enabling the advanced care of cardiac, medical, and cardiothoracic surgical patients at a 1:4 nurse-patient ratio. Eight beds within the unit are designated for Progressive Care Unit capability at a 1:3 nurse-patient ratio, allowing for a more intense focus on those patients with complex illness that require step-down level care outside the scope of the ICU. Cardiac Telemetry nurses demonstrate clinical excellence in care of the open heart surgery population, CHF, PAH, AMI / PCI, medical arrhythmia management, and cardiac implantable devices. In addition, medical surgical overflow with a cardiopulmonary focus is also served by these expert clinicians. The unit is known for its camaraderie, low turnover, and challenging clinical growth opportunities.
Same Day Care Unit (SDC)
This unit provides care for the chest pain patient population and for cardiac outpatient pre and post procedures as well as other observation patients. There are currently 35 patient treatment spaces designated for same day care procedures.
Crean Cardiovascular Lab
Our Cardiovascular Cath Lab houses two procedure suites and one additional electrophysiology lab. We receive adult inpatients and outpatients for elective and urgent comprehensive cardiac catheterization and angiography procedures. This includes heart catheterization, coronary angiography, ventriculography, PTCA, coronary stenting, coronary directional and rotational atherectomy, Patent Foramen Ovale Closure, electrophysiology studies, ablations, permanent pacemakers and AICD implantations. Our skilled team of RNs, CVTs and Certified Radiology Technicians perform up to 15 cases a day.
Electrophysiology Lab
With our new Electrophysiology Lab, we are now the only hospital in Orange County to use the latest Stereotaxis technology. This involves using magnets and advanced computer imaging to ablate electrical pathways in a gentler, softer and more accurate manner. The result is faster recovery and lower risk of serious complications.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
In operation since 1976, our Cardiac Rehab Center was the first of its kind in Orange County. We currently see up to 90 patients a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and average 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The incredible work done here is performed by a highly dedicated staff of RNs, Exercise Physiologists and an office coordinator. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend cardiac rehab for all patients who have suffered a heart attack, have had cardiac surgery or have had an intervention such as a stent. It is also an excellent tool for managing congestive heart failure patients in order to avoid hospitalization.
